Correct clear setup faults first, then explore the most useful remaining question with a measured comparison.

Understand the method
Identify the basket first
Use its recommended dose and grind. Pressurized and unknown baskets need equipment-specific guidance; underside flow is not a universal preparation test.
Keep targets and evidence separate
Record dry coffee, beverage mass and time from machine start. Record pre-infusion settings and observed first drops separately. A scale cannot measure extraction percentage.
Taste beyond good or bad
Compare acidity, sweetness, bitterness, drying sensation and body. Fruity acidity can be enjoyable. A flavor word describes perception; it does not establish the brewing fault.
Work through a problem
Choose what you noticed. Check equipment warnings first; taste alone cannot identify a cause.
Equipment firstLeak, unusual pressure or unsafe operation
- Check first
- Is the machine behaving differently from its manual?
- Safe next step
- Stop using it and follow its shutdown and service instructions. Never unlock a pressurized portafilter.
- Hold steady
- Pause recipe changes.
- Watch for
- A manufacturer-approved resolution before brewing again.
Keep in mind Coffee advice cannot establish equipment safety.
Spraying or uneven flow
- Check first
- Confirm a non-pressurized basket; check fitted dose, clumps, rim cleanliness and tamp.
- Try next
- Correct identified preparation faults together before testing an unresolved grind question.
- Hold steady
- Coffee, correctly fitted dose, yield and machine settings.
- Watch for
- Whether both flow and taste become more consistent; record combined fixes.
Keep in mind A bottomless view suggests possibilities; it does not prove channeling or identify one cause.
Fast to target and sharply sour or thin
- Check first
- Confirm dose, yield and timing. After a dial change, retained grounds may mix old and new settings.
- Try next
- With an identified non-pressurized basket, compare a small step finer following the grinder’s adjustment and clearing instructions.
- Hold steady
- Dose, yield, corrected preparation and pre-infusion.
- Watch for
- Representative doses for taste, body and repeatability at the same yield.
Keep in mind Finer is not always better. Motor-on rules and clearing amounts depend on the grinder; no fixed shot count applies.
Only drips or nearly stalled
- Check first
- Check fitted dose, clean outlets and whether retained grounds followed a recent grind change.
- Try next
- After setup checks, compare a small step coarser following the grinder’s adjustment and clearing instructions.
- Hold steady
- Correctly fitted dose, coffee and target yield.
- Watch for
- Representative doses with more repeatable flow and preferred taste.
Keep in mind Do not prolong a blocked shot. A transition dose need not represent the new setting.
Explore flavor
Already enjoying your coffee? Explore what else it can do. Compare one deliberate change, and keep the version you prefer.
Explore a shorter or longer shot
- Change
- Choose one modest beverage-mass change; keep the dry dose fixed.
- Hold steady
- Coffee, grind, preparation and machine settings.
- Compare
- Body, acidity, bitterness and finish at similar tasting temperatures.
Yield changes concentration and extraction together; no flavor outcome is guaranteed.
Separate intensity from brewing
- Change
- Split one stirred shot into equal samples. Add measured drinking water to one.
- Hold steady
- The brewed shot and tasting conditions.
- Compare
- Which balance and texture you prefer as intensity falls.
Dilution changes strength; it does not extract more from the puck.
