The Skinny Iced Latte: A Lighter Coffee-Shop Drink

Black coffee has about five calories. Everything else in a coffee-shop drink, the whole milk, the flavored syrups, the whipped cream, is where the calories pile up, often to 300 or more in a single cup. The good news: you can keep the creamy, sweet, satisfying iced latte you love and cut the calories dramatically, without it tasting like a sad diet drink. Here is how.

The Skinny Iced Latte

  • Brew about 2 to 3 ounces of strong coffee or espresso and let it cool (a moka pot works great).
  • Fill a glass with ice and pour the coffee over it.
  • Top with 4 to 6 ounces of unsweetened almond milk (around 30 to 40 calories per cup) or skim milk.
  • Sweeten with a little monk fruit, stevia, or allulose, and add a few drops of vanilla extract.

That is a creamy, sweet iced latte for roughly 40 to 60 calories instead of 200-plus.

The Smart Swaps

You do not really need a recipe so much as a few levers. Pull any of these and the calories drop:

  • Milk: whole milk is the richest but heaviest. Unsweetened almond, light soy, or skim cut the most; barista oat sits in the middle.
  • Sweetener: swap sugar and flavored syrups for monk fruit, stevia, or allulose, which add sweetness with little or no calories.
  • Flavor without sugar: vanilla extract, cinnamon, unsweetened cocoa, and nutmeg add tons of character for essentially zero calories.
  • Whipped cream: skip it, or use a small amount of a light version.

The Best Lever of All: Good Coffee

Here is the part most diet tips miss. Bitter, low-grade coffee needs sugar and cream to be drinkable, which is exactly where the calories come from. A naturally sweet, certified specialty grade coffee tastes good with far less added to it.
