Equipment makes a difference

Grinder changes, with the details that matter.

Use the instructions for your exact model. Retained grounds, adjustment mechanisms and initial burr break-in are different questions. These three reviewed models are a starting reference; an unlisted or uncertain model needs its own manual.

Breville Smart Grinder Pro (BCG820)
Adjustment
Use the external Grind Size dial. If that dial is tight, Breville says to use START|PAUSE|CANCEL while turning it to release grounds caught between the burrs. Upper-burr range adjustment is a separate illustrated procedure in the manual.
Clearing
The manual recommends a two-second purge before use for freshness. That is not a guarantee that every grind change has completely exchanged retained grounds. Record a transition dose if relevant, and assess a dose that represents the new setting; no fixed three-shot rule applies.

Confirm BCG820 on the model label; these notes do not cover the BCG800 Smart Grinder or an integrated machine grinder. Follow the manual’s shutdown and unplugging instructions before disassembly or cleaning. A purge is not a prescribed number of full shots to discard.

Baratza Encore ESP
Adjustment
The Encore ESP manual requires the grinder to be running or completely empty of beans when making grind adjustments. This applies to adjustments in either direction; use this model’s manual ahead of general grinder advice.
Clearing
Baratza explains that grounds retained in the chamber and chute can carry the previous setting into a later dose and describes a brief purge after changes. The reviewed Encore ESP manual does not establish a transition shot count or a measured purge mass. Record the transition and assess representative grounds.

For Encore ESP, not the standard Encore or Encore ESP Pro. A dial number is local to the grinder. Follow the manual before removing parts or clearing a clog; unplug before disassembly or cleaning. Retained grounds after a setting change are different from initial grinder settling.

Fellow Opus 1 (original)
Adjustment
On the original Opus, the outer ring selects finer settings toward 1 and coarser settings toward 11. Its inner-ring procedure is separate and specific to Opus 1. Use Fellow’s instructions for that procedure rather than treating it as another ordinary dial change.
Clearing
Use its single-dose loading method. Before cleaning, the safety manual recommends running the empty grinder for ten seconds to help clear the burrs and chute, then waiting for it to stop and unplugging it. This cleaning step is not a purge requirement after every setting change.

Confirm the original Opus 1; Opus 2 has a different calibration procedure, and Ode is a different grinder. These reviewed sources supply no general finer-versus-coarser motor-on rule or fixed transition shot count. Never reach into the grinder or chute while plugged in.

Manufacturer model instructions take priority over general tips. A timer setting is not a measurement of dry coffee mass; weigh the next dose when adjusting a timed grinder. A clearing instruction for cleaning or freshness does not establish a universal post-adjustment purge or a number of shots to discard.

A useful next step, with clear limits.

These reference-based guides separate targets from measurements and a plausible comparison from a diagnosis. Equipment warnings and your manufacturer’s instructions take priority. Source links and scope appear on every guide.
